Tattle Diary Entry #15: Why Is Janice Poon So Involved With The Fannibals?

Janice Poon is (or was) the primary or chief food artist for NBC’s Hannibal TV series. She’s been overly involved with the fandom since the start of the show and continues to be involved to a creepy high level even now. Though I don’t have any actual explanation as to what’s going on or why she would be involved like this I do know it’s highly suspect for several reasons.

I first noticed how overly involved Janice was in around 2015 or so when Jennifer was doing her Christmas Giveaway thing. Janice was going to have a book published in January of 2016 or so. Might have the dates wrong on this but I’m pretty sure this is the case. Anyway, Jennifer was really buddy buddy with Janice. Like, actually. It wasn’t a vague or fleeting thing like Fuller or Lara Jean, they were like actively chatting a lot of the time. Janice gave her some advanced recipes from the book and Jennifer sold them in a “gift package” at a huge markup. She claimed they were “limited” and she only had like 30 or something but then miraculously the next week she “found” 15 more. The gift packages which were just a few cards, stickers, and one of the recipe cards (she also didn’t specify which you’d get) cost a person $45 dollars. A huge profit for a minimal investment. I digress.

How, exactly, she was so buddy buddy with Janice that she even got advanced recipes from the Hannibal Cookbook that had yet to be released, I don’t know. However, this was the first time I noticed that Janice was a bit too friendly with the fans. Even after this point, Jennifer did some kind of “giveaway” contest and Janice was personally congratulating all of the winners. This contest had nothing to do with Janice or anything Janice had done, Loretta Ramos was also personally congratulating the winners of this contest. She’s a producer on the show. Bryan Fuller, Martha, and the cast stayed out of it like they normally do.

Flash forward to 2017 when FannibalFest has it’s first convention. Janice seemed to be involved from day one. Promoting, retweeting, and slapping her name on every food related everything the fandom was doing. Weird right? Like why? What is her investment in this? Then it was thought they must be paying her a lot of money. There’s no way to really know this but they must, right? Why would a professional food artist with her talent be this insane on promoting this convention? Then you have to consider that at some point FannibalFest did state that they were paying for guests based on ticket sales. However, if you want to book a professional like that and also have her do actual work at the convention like oversee an entire dinner for like 100 people, then it’s not just an appearance fee anymore. It’s more than that. To be fair, I don’t know the going rate for professional food artists and chefs but, Janice spends the whole weekend there. Four days. She does question and answer sessions, photo ops, and she oversees meals and supervises chefs. Either they are paying her a huge amount of money or she’s doing this on the cheap because what?

Two reasons I can think of at this point:

  1. She’s just as obsessed with Hannibal as all these other people. Janice talks to them all the time and much like Fuller engages in inappropriate personal levels of relationships with these people, even worse than him to some extent. She talks about Hannibal all the time, Hannigram and murder husbands as well. She sounds like one of them in her tweets, begging people to come attend FannibalFest. Honestly, she comes across as an insane fan girl herself.

  2. Even though Janice has clearly worked in this industry for awhile and has talent which cannot be denied, this is probably the first time she got any recognition to this level. Had actual fans. Though she has run a blog for a long time, and had some kind of connection to the industry she probably was never promoted more than her food. Also, it’s just food. She can make it look pretty for the camera and taste good for the actors but really what people care more about is the food. This gave her exposure to idiots who would definitely fawn all over her because they are idiots and this made her an attention whore.

The first FannibalFest only raised a little over 14 thousand dollars for the convention. They also managed to book 7 celebrity guests on this amount. Nothing huge but celebrities nonetheless. People like Aaron Abrams and Scott Thompson who are decently famous. This as well as some guy who was in like two episodes, Martha De Laurentiis the trophy wife (so you know she doesn’t do ANYTHING for cheap payment), the guy who played Garret Jacob Hobbs, and then allegedly Ellen Muth who never showed up and they never explained why. There was no official word on why Ellen dropped out after the announcement she was attending. Though I know it’s not uncommon for people to cancel appearances it’s definitely uncommon for a convention runner not to explain why, even if it’s something as vague as “prior engagements” or whatever. FannibalFest didn’t even attempt to do that and pretty much went out of their way to attempt to cover up they ever announced her in the first place by deleting a bunch of stuff. Which is odd.

It’s questionable how they paid all of these people to appear for a day or two, but Janice was there the entire time for both conventions. She’s also slapping her name pretty freely onto very poor quality food dishes. It’s hard to believe that as a professional chef this passes her standards and even if she’s being lax on these hotel chefs cause they aren’t experts, why would you put your name on something that is clearly not worth the $170 dollars people are being charged for it? She is a professional, she does have to protect her name, and she is endorsing some of the worst quality food I’ve ever seen as “great” and using her name to present this dinner. It’s hard to tell what’s going on. Is she just as obsessed as these fans? Does she just like the attention? Is it a little of both? Janice is yet another anomaly in this whole fandom. Janice is one of the crew members who is inappropriately engaged not just with the lore of the show but the entire fandom. Too up close and personal with very little boundaries. In all of my years, with all of the fandoms I’ve ever been in, I have never seen cast and crew get this personally involved with the fandom. It’s kind of terrifying and I’m wondering why these people are still being pandered to, to this level, when the show’s been cancelled for three years now.
